India’s Polio-Free Status Faces Ongoing Vigilance, Says Health Minister JP Nadda
India’s polio-free status, certified by the WHO in 2014, remains a key public health achievement. On World Polio Day, Health Minister JP Nadda stressed vigilance against poliovirus importation and stronger immunisation efforts to protect every child.
In a social media post on the occasion of World Polio Day, Nadda said India’s polio-free status, certified by the World Health Organisation in 2014, reflects the country’s sustained commitment to immunisation.
The Health Minister emphasised that the risk of poliovirus importation requires continued attention and stronger efforts to safeguard every child against the disease.
Highlighting the government’s ongoing immunisation efforts, Nadda said the Universal Immunization Programme and supplementary vaccination campaigns continue to ensure that children under five receive additional doses of the Oral Polio Vaccine. These efforts also extend to the most remote and underserved communities.
Nadda stressed that maintaining high immunisation coverage, strengthening disease surveillance and ensuring that no child remains unprotected are key priorities in the fight against polio.
His message on World Polio Day highlighted the importance of sustaining immunisation efforts and maintaining vigilance to protect India’s polio-free status.
